Tyler Gibney (HVW8): A Better Tomorrow

“The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his information and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him he’s always doing both.”
-anonymous

Tyler Gibney was born in Calgary, Canada and attended Concordia University, from which he graduated with a Bachelor’s in Fine Arts, Major in Design. He then started working freelance with his own “high rollers/headache” company and working with the Voice of Montreal which would soon become Vice Magazine. After leaving Vice magazine he founded Heavyweight Production House in 1998 with Gene ‘Starship’ Pendon and Dan ‘DSTRBO’ Buller. As part of the Heavyweight Art Installation he toured worldwide and held exhibitions at galleries such as the Parco gallery in Tokyo, 2001, and at the Museum of Canadian Contemporary Art (MOCCA) in Toronto and the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico in 2002.

In 2004 Tyler relocated to Los Angeles to open Heavyweight Production House, Inc, which includes music and fine arts projects, a clothing line, and design services for commercial clients such as adidas, Gravis and MGM. He co-founded the HVW8 Art + Design Gallery in 2006, which is a studio and exhibition space for HVW8 and friends. In 2008 Tyler launched HVW8 records featuring the Hawthorne Headhunters. He currently lives in Los Angeles.

Savage Henry: and the winner is

Scag baron Savage Henry was formally wheeled into the world of low brow art in the mid 90's when Mme. Blanche Leroux, was persuaded by the late, great Dr. Hunter S. Thompson to give him a better life in Paris.

Within weeks he had swapped his runners for brushes and embarked upon an artistic odyssey that would regularly see him wrestle himself to the ground in his tiny atelier in the Latin quarter of Paris, often late into the night, showing little mercy to himself or his neighbours.

This latest work celebrates his achievements in Europe and, perhaps more significantly, his enduring appeal, to the now decrepit and frail Mme. Leroux, to whom he has become a veritable trophy.

Robalot: Evel Yamake

"...Robalot's discodelic glitter art is an ironic observation of the twenty first century's insatiable appetite for high octane iconography....It observes consumerism, desires and passions, yet recognizes the impermanence of it all...."

Ben Allen: Homage to Leigh Bowery

Ben Allen lives and works in Brighton UK.

He has worked with many clients including Virgin, Levis, Channel 5 and The Hoxton Hotel.

This year he has been busy creating bespoke wallpaper for one of London’s hip restaurants within the O2 Dome, selling to celebrities such as Richard Branson and painting 18ft wall murals for Brit actress Patsy Palmer.

Currently developing a bespoke range of furniture, fully equipped with designs hot off the back of his original works, Ben’s paintings juxtapose beauty against a harsher backdrop of textures found on the streets and buildings of his homecity and those he visits and absorbs around the world.

Working in a multitude of media and materials, his influences include comic book art, Japanese graphics and packaging, typography, physical communication, nature and the human condition.

Ben’s paintings have been exhibited from London to LA and are in private collections throughout the UK, Australia, New York, Barcelona and Japan. His work has been featured in the Observer, Elle Déco and GQ magazines.

His design can now be found on his latest release of luxury cards and shortly on a range of t’shirts featuring a range of his most iconic images.

At the age of fifteen, Sunil skipped school one afternoon, and walked into the North London offices of music legends, Soul II Soul with a bag full of paintings, he sold everyone of them. Seventeen years later and painting and Djing are still a very big part of his life.

One of the pioneers of the British stencil art scene his work embraces the urban art and dj culture of London. Sunil was featured in the book 'Stencil Graffiti' by Tristan Manco and regularly appears in exhibitions, magazines and books worldwide.

Sunil's art echoes his world of Dj culture, sound system clashes and graffiti art and fashion, using a bold mixture of spraypaints and acrylics.
